While the Lower Cape did not get as much snow as other parts of New England we were hit with sustained high winds and hurricane force gusts for a period of over 24 hours that downed trees and caused massive power outages. The storm also coincided with an astronomical high tide that caused flooding, and extensive beach erosion. Some of the worst hit areas were the Sandwich shoreline, Chatham’s outer beach, Nauset Beach in Orleans, and the National Seashore beaches (Nauset Light and Coast Guard) in Eastham. Eastham’s bay side beaches also suffered. The stairs to Thumpertown Beach were damaged and Campground Beach lost part of its parking lot. Fortunately most of the affects of this storm are temporary. Power was restored within two or three days and work has already begun to fix access to the beaches.
