First Encounter Beach

First Encounter Beach, Eastham, MA 2013_09_20_9_2

Just off Route 6 in Eastham, following Herringbrook Road to Samoset Road there is a lovely protected beach. The sun still baths the soft white sand as the gulls call overhead doing their aerial dance in the salt laden air. Tide, inexorable as time, move in and out from the shore line. Ageless, for an instant it can seem as if time has stood still in the warm afternoon light.

First Encounter Beach, Eastham, MA

Out of all the stretches of sandy beaches along the bay side of the Cape, on December 12, 1620 this is where the Mayflower colonists first encountered Indians. Little did they know a year later, in 1621, the Plymouth colonists and Wampanoag Indians shared an autumn harvest feast that is acknowledged today as one of the first Thanksgiving celebrations in the colonies.

Thus named for that meeting, First Encounter should be on the list of places to visit and enjoy while on Cape Cod. It’s also the perfect place to have a walk after the turkey and fixings this coming holiday.

What do Buyers Want?

The National Association of Realtors recently released its 2013 Profile of Buyers’ Home Feature Preferences. This survey asked home buyers within the last two years what features they preferred when buying a home. The survey also took into consideration factors such as age of the buyer, region, and composition of household. Some results were obvious. For instance southern buyers preferred homes with central air conditioning. In the northeast people preferred homes with basements, dining rooms and hardwood floors. The top overall preferences were central air conditioning, walk-in closet in the master bedroom, a cable/satellite/internet ready house, and an en-suite master bathroom. This survey also showed that the kitchen was the room that was remodeled most after the purchase of a home suggesting that sellers should do minimal upgrades and renovations on their kitchen before listing since buyers are willing to spend the money to make it their own. If you are interested in selling or buying a home on Cape Cod, please call us at 508-255-3560, email us at sales@hoppercapecod.com, or visit our home listings on our website. Cape Cod Wild Turkey

Traffic jams in Eastham are pretty rare in the middle of the winter. However occasionally they are caused by one of the great comeback stories of the Cape. Like coyotes, seals, and great white sharks the wild turkey has not only repopulated the Cape, but is thriving. Their reemergence on the Cape is not by accident. They were purposefully reintroduced in the late 80s and early 90s at Camp Edwards and the National Seashore as part of a larger effort to bring the wild turkey back to Massachusetts whose population was annihilated in the mid 19th century. Twenty-five years later turkey sightings are now very common. These large birds that range from 9 to 24 pounds move in large groups on the ground and often cause standstill traffic as they travel across roads. Even though there is a hunting season for these birds on the Cape they have become accustomed to living in a densely populated area and have very little fear of humans. Most residents have a story about turkeys traveling through their yards or being attracted to reflective surfaces like the sides of their cars. So while the white shark gets all the media attention, it is the wild turkey that you are most likely to spot on your Cape Cod vacation.

Cape Cod Blizzard 2013 – Bruised but NOT Beaten

While the Lower Cape did not get as much snow as other parts of New England we were hit with sustained high winds and hurricane force gusts for a period of over 24 hours that downed trees and caused massive power outages. The storm also coincided with an astronomical high tide that caused flooding, and extensive beach erosion. Some of the worst hit areas were the Sandwich shoreline, Chatham’s outer beach, Nauset Beach in Orleans, and the National Seashore beaches (Nauset Light and Coast Guard) in Eastham. Eastham’s bay side beaches also suffered. The stairs to Thumpertown Beach were damaged and Campground Beach lost part of its parking lot. Fortunately most of the affects of this storm are temporary. Power was restored within two or three days and work has already begun to fix access to the beaches. Everything will be back to normal for the 2013 Summer tourist season so do not delay in making plans and booking your perfect Cape Cod vacation rental.
