Beat the Heat at the Beach!

Another hot day? Beach the heat at the beach! Planning for a hot day at the beach can ensure that you have an enjoyable and safe experience. Here are some tips to help you plan for a hot day at the beach:

  1. Check the weather: Before heading to the beach, make sure to check the weather forecast. Look for sunny and clear skies, and take note of the temperature and any potential heat advisories.
  2. Choose the right beach: Pick a beach that offers amenities such as shaded areas, umbrellas, and nearby facilities like restrooms and refreshment stands. It’s also helpful to consider the cleanliness and safety of the beach you’re planning to visit.
  3. Pack essential items: Prepare a beach bag with all the necessary items you’ll need. Some essential items include:
    • Sunscreen: Choose a broad-spectrum sunscreen with a high SPF and apply it generously to protect your skin from harmful UV rays.
    • Sun hat and sunglasses: These will provide additional protection for your face and eyes.
    • Beach umbrella or canopy: Having a shaded area to retreat to can help you escape the direct sun during the hottest parts of the day.
    • Beach towels and chairs: Pack enough towels for everyone and bring portable beach chairs or mats for comfortable seating.
    • Cooler with drinks and snacks: Stay hydrated by bringing plenty of water and pack some healthy snacks to keep you energized.
    • Swimsuits and towels: Don’t forget your swimwear and extra towels for swimming and drying off.
    • Extra clothing: Bring a light cover-up, a change of clothes, and a warm layer for cooler evening temperatures.
    • Beach games and entertainment: Consider bringing items like beach balls, frisbees, or a good book to keep you entertained.
  4. Timing is important: Plan to arrive at the beach early in the morning or later in the afternoon to avoid the peak heat of the day. This can help minimize your exposure to intense sun and reduce the risk of heat-related illnesses.
  5. Hydrate frequently: Drink plenty of water throughout the day to stay hydrated. Avoid excessive alcohol or caffeine consumption as they can contribute to dehydration.
  6. Practice sun safety: Apply sunscreen 30 minutes before sun exposure and reapply it every two hours, or more frequently if you’re swimming or sweating. Seek shade periodically, especially during the hottest part of the day.
  7. Stay cool: Take breaks in the shade, use a beach umbrella or canopy, and bring a handheld fan or portable misting fan to stay cool. Consider wearing lightweight and breathable clothing to help regulate your body temperature.
  8. Water safety: If you plan to swim, be mindful of water safety. Follow any posted warnings or advisories, swim in designated areas, and be aware of currents or rip tides. If you’re not a strong swimmer, consider wearing a life jacket.
  9. Respect the environment: Remember to leave the beach clean and dispose of your trash properly. Follow any local guidelines regarding beach activities and wildlife protection.

By following these tips, you can make the most of your hot day at the beach while staying safe and comfortable. Enjoy your time in the sun!

Oceanside vs Bayside Who Wins, You do!

We are asked all the time, “what’s the difference between the Oceanside and the Bayside beaches?”. There are so many choices! The better question is, what are you looking for? Here’s a handy comparison of both.

OCEANSIDE

BAYSIDE

Sand Conditions: Mainly soft with a white to off white color. There is a pebbly tide line on many of the beaches. Mainly soft or with a light texture and off white in color. There is a pebbly tide line on many of the beaches.

Surf Conditions: Moderate Surf meaning: Small to medium sized waves under normal conditions. Wave action will increase if there is an offshore storm. Great for surfing! Swimming can be more of a challenge. Mild Surf meaning: The Water is flat-calm or gently lapping at the shoreline. Swimming is good for all ages and abilities. Wave action will increase if there is an offshore storm.

Water Temperature: COLD! The water is the large Atlantic ocean with no real protection from the vast chilly volume. Water temperatures in the summer may reach into the low 60s but is warmer in the tide pools that form when the tide goes out. Chilly but warmer than the ocean side beaches. Water temperatures normally reach upper 60s to low 70s in the summer. The Tidal pools that form when the tide goes out and creeks hold even warmer water.

Accessibility: Some of the Eastham oceanside beaches are wheel chair accessible. Others have wooden stairs from the top of the dune down to the beach. Nauset Light and Coast Guard have paths down to the beach. Numerous Eastham bayside beaches either have wooden pathways or just blue carpeted walkways down to the beach. Some Eastham public and private access points have wooden stairs down to the beach.
Cooks Brook: Path

Boat Meadow: Path
Campground: Path

Cole Road: Path
First Encounter: Path
Kingsbury: Path
Thumpertown: Stairs
Sunken Meadow: Path

Location Tips: 40+ miles of federally protected land and coastlines with light houses, walking and biking trails, historic sites, nature preserves and breathtakingly lovely scenery.

Beach camping and small campfires are allowed at some of the Ocean beaches too.

Tide charts are recommended!

‘The Flats”

When the tide goes out on the bay, it goes Way out. Leaving miles and miles of sandflats to walk, jog or fly your kite. And hundreds of tide pools to explore for pretty shells and little sea critters, as the bay waters recede.

The High Tide comes in very fast, please be aware of that when out on the Flats.

Tide charts are recommended!

Nauset Light Goes Au Naturel

Nauset Light Beach has stepped back in time to when there were no stairs to the beach. In the past few years the National Seashore beaches in Eastham have been the hardest hit by erosion from storms. In 2015 eighteen feet of sandy bluff was lost from Nauset Light Beach and an additional ten feet was lost in 2016.  Instead of continually replacing the tall wooden staircase to the beach that wash away every winter, the decision was made to remove the stairs and create a walking path similar to the one at neighboring Coast Guard Beach. In October of 2017 the bathhouse, restrooms, and stairs were demolished and a winding sloping path the length of two football fields began. The bathhouse and restrooms will eventually be rebuilt but for now Nauset Light Beach is back to nature.

Take a walk this summer down the new path to Nauset Light Beach, Eastham, MA and enjoy the splendor of the constantly changing landscape of Cape Cod’s National Seashore. Hopper Real Estate currently has many prime weeks for rent in Eastham so call 508-255-3560, email us info@hoppercapecod.com, or visit us online www.hoppercapecod.com to book your vacation on the Outer Cape.
